What thematic analysis actually is
You ran several user interviews.
The notes are long, the quotes are interesting, and now you have to decide what any of it means.
The question in front of you is whether thematic analysis is the right way to turn those conversations into decisions—or whether it is more process than your situation needs.
The short answer: if you have more than a couple of interviews and you want findings you can defend to a co-founder, investor, or team, a systematic method usually pays off.
If you have one or two informal conversations and a narrow question, a lighter read-through may be enough.
Here is how to tell the difference, and what thematic analysis actually involves.
Thematic analysis is a systematic method for organizing rich qualitative data.
You tag observations and quotations with codes, making significant themes easier to discover.
According to the Nielsen Norman Group, a theme describes a belief, practice, need, or other phenomenon discovered from the data.
A theme emerges when related findings appear multiple times across participants or data sources.
Two parts of that definition matter for your decision.
First, themes come from repetition across participants, not from one memorable quote.
Second, the method is systematic: you tag observations, then group the tags, then name the groups.
That structure is what separates analysis from a summary of what you remember best.
The problem it solves
Qualitative research produces long transcripts and extensive field notes.
NN/g describes what happens without a systematic process: analysis becomes superficial, focusing on memorable events and quotes while missing large sections of notes.
Findings stop being definitive because conflicting feedback goes unresolved, or viewpoints that do not fit the researcher's beliefs get ignored.
When no goals are set for the analysis, the aims of the original data collection get lost, and the research ends up reporting on the wrong thing.
If you have ever left an interview session more convinced of an idea you already held, that is the failure mode thematic analysis is designed to counter.
