Why partial commitment is so common
You met someone who seems like a great co-founder.
The conversation flows, the skills complement yours, and the idea excites you both.
Then comes the awkward part: they are not ready to quit their job and go all-in.
Maybe they have a mortgage, a visa situation, a family commitment, or simply doubts they have not voiced yet.
Now you face a real decision: proceed anyway, set conditions and wait, or move on.
This guide walks through how to tell those three situations apart, what a fair trial project looks like, and how to protect your own momentum while you decide.
Not being ready for full-time co-founding is normal, not a red flag by itself.
Many strong candidates are employed, caring for family, or finishing a degree.
Y Combinator notes that a quarter of aspiring founders in its Startup School community cite not having a co-founder as a blocker to starting full-time YC co-founder matching.
Finding someone both compatible and ready at the same moment is genuinely difficult.
The timing mismatch is the problem to solve, not the person.
The question is whether the mismatch is temporary and narrow, or a sign of deeper hesitation about you, the idea, or the risk itself.
1. Proceed: the work can start now
If the idea can be validated part-time, and your candidate is willing to contribute consistently on evenings and weekends, you can proceed without anyone quitting a job.
Many early validation steps, customer interviews, a landing page, a rough prototype, do not require full-time effort.
What they do require is reliability.
Proceed when all of these are true:
- The candidate commits to specific, recurring working hours, not vague availability.
- Their day job or contract does not forbid outside work in this space.
- You agree on what the first milestone is and by roughly when.
- Neither of you treats part-time as a loophole to avoid decisions.
The tradeoff: part-time progress is slower, and momentum can stall if the other person keeps deprioritizing the project.
If you find yourself chasing them for updates after the first few weeks, that is data.
